Curious Case of the Pandemic & the Creative

Must Read

An avid creative whose word plays so much that words say I play too much; a Ki'shon flow. Life is a journey and we're all full of stories.

‘Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.’

Restricted movements on the streets, self-isolation, quarantines and nation lockdown measures. Everything in this season points to the fact that we have to stay indoors whether we’re working or we’re schooling.

And for most people, the idea to channel creativity in this season is a must if not a need, simply because they argue that ‘creatives most of the time are caught up in life and don’t have as much time that they’d wish to get to allow their creative juices to flow.

This situation with everyone staying indoors is the prime time for them to let it all out.’ The solid argument, there’s not a lot wrong with it.

Only one thing however, this idea of us all being indoors isn’t a matter of decision, it’s on a need-to-survive basis. What’s the difference? Well, first of all, the world isn’t in the most optimum state we have known it to be in; a pandemic doesn’t necessarily put your state of mind in a balanced position or in a position to create positively.

There is an order to things, currently, that order doesn’t exist. But everyone has shunned all that and assumed that it’s the perfect time for the creative to produce. It’s as though they are responsible for the current period in the world and are being told to own up to it and create.

I don’t think people have given the thought to the fact that creatives are like everyone else, people, and are probably experiencing the same if not more of an emotional and mental struggle everyone out there is feeling. The fact that nature is currently compromised and the progression of life is being halted every single passing day.

People are dying. Well, people have been dying since, but now it’s alarming and saddening. And I can boldly say that most of the creatives out there who are churning out stuff, are producing stuff that is far away from what is currently happening and that in itself is difficult, even though when pulled off, creates hope to an astronomical extent.

There is beauty in art such that, if good enough, can for second, alleviate all despair and frustration that the one experiencing it might have, but it’s easy, and sad to make art on what is happening without bringing light. It is in fact criminal on the path of any creative that has produced anything with the current pandemic as a theme or topic and not brought hope out of it.

The truth is, the creative at this point might be struggling to even harness the thought of creation simply because their mind is not at peace with the current situation. Emotions are either missing because of how awestruck this situation has made all of us, or aren’t being processed into anything refined that can be used as inspiration to write.

It’s a strain that few have noticed and probably think it is worth nothing. But it is worth everything; creatives breathe life into society with their ability to interact with the divine and unknown and make it plain to the whole world. Let’s give them their space in this chaotic time both without and within.
